Expo 2020 (2021) Dubai
Expo 2020 will be held in Dubai, the city in the United Arab Emirates that has gained high international standing during the last 10 years and has since maintained one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
The World’s Fair…
Long before the telephone, the airplane, and the internet, the original World’s Fair or World Expo was created in 1851 as a method of presenting the achievements of nations in a single setting.
Countless modern accomplishments, among them the telephone, the Ferris wheel, the dishwasher, and even the Eiffel Tower, have all debuted at various World’s Fairs hosted by prominent cities around the globe.
A world’s fair is a large international exhibition designed to showcase achievements of nations, which all vary in character and are held in different parts of the world at a specific site for a period of time, ranging usually from three to six months.
Since the 1928 Convention Relating to International Exhibitions came into force, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) has served as an international sanctioning body for international exhibitions. Four types of international exhibition are organised under the auspices of the BIE: World Expos, Specialised Expos, Horticultural Expos (regulated by the International Association of Horticultural Producers) and the Milan Triennial.
Milan, Italy, held the most recent World Expo in 2015, while Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, held the most recent Specialised Expo in 2017.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, was selected to host Expo 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was postponed to 2021.
Countries around the world create pavilions emblematic of their respective cultures and exemplary building techniques to showcase what’s unique to their country and nation.
The Dubai Expo2020 master plan, designed by American design, architecture, engineering, and urban planning firm HOK, will host 190 pavilions across 1,083 acres between the cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The expo’s theme is “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” with three sub-themes: opportunity, mobility and sustainability, each with its own pavilion.
The Opportunity pavilion is designed by AGi Architects, Mobility by Foster and Partners, and Sustainability by Grimshaw Architects.
Dubai Expo 2020 is a chance for people to connect from different corners of the globe, to experience the best art, culture, science, innovation, and invention, and to set into motion a huge number of new ideas and concepts that will make a permanent impression in life.
“In today’s highly interconnected world, a renewed vision of progress and development based on shared purpose and commitment is key. While a married human mind, an individual country, or a specific community is both unique and remarkable, it is by working collaboratively that we truly advance.” Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
Expo2020 Is A Case For Nation Branding…
A major study by Tjaco Walvis called “Expo 2000 Hanover in Numbers” showed that improving national image was the main goal for 73% of the countries participating in Expo 2000. Pavilions became a kind of advertising campaign, and the Expo served as a vehicle for nation branding.
The majority of the structures built for the Expo are temporary and dismantled after the fair closes. However,
Landmark towers from several fairs are notable exceptions. By far the most famous of these is the Eiffel Tower, built for the Exposition Universelle (1889).
Although it is now the most recognized symbol of its host city Paris, a number of influential contemporary critics opposed its construction, and there were demands for it to be dismantled after the fair’s conclusion, which obviously did not happen and today it is the icon of Paris.
L’Oréal will partner with Expo 2020 Dubai to present latest beauty products and services and participate in events showcasing the future of beauty, driven by personalization, new technologies and sustainable innovation. L’Oréal will operate beauty studios and a pop-up store inside the Expo and offer visitors access to talks and conferences, beauty shows and immersive experiences onsite.
L’Oréal will also have a presence in the French Pavilion, where the Group will host high-level B2B sessions and events with key stakeholders around women empowerment, climate change, technology and the future of beauty.
Alexandre Popoff, Executive Vice-President Eastern Europe and Africa, Middle East at L’Oréal, said: “At L’Oréal, our mission is to meet the beauty needs and aspirations of women and men in every part of the world. Our vision of beauty is sustainable, tailor-made and powered by new technologies, to make beauty products and services even more accessible, adapted and inspiring to all. We are thrilled and honoured to partner with Expo 2020 Dubai, which is a perfect place to present our innovations and share our vision of the future with people coming together from all over the world.”
